SpaceX Challenges Iridium Communications Conduct During Rocket Lab's $8 Billion Acquisition Review
SpaceX has requested the Federal Communications Commission to scrutinize the conduct of Iridium Communications during the regulatory review of Rocket Lab's proposed $8.1 billion acquisition. The dispute centers on potential radio interference from SpaceX's next-generation Starlink gateways, which share spectrum bands with Iridium's existing systems. While SpaceX does not oppose the transaction, it accused Iridium of a history of anticompetitive behavior, noting that Iridium filed over 50 petitions in eight months to restrict rival satellite deployments. Iridium Communications defended its objections, stating that several proposed gateways could exceed permissible interference levels by a wide margin. However, the company noted that coordination talks with SpaceX are progressing toward a resolution. The merger is scheduled for a shareholder vote on September 24, where Iridium shareholders will receive $27 in cash and a variable number of Rocket Lab shares. The deal is expected to close in mid-2027, provided it receives regulatory approval. The transaction is significant for Rocket Lab, as it marks a shift from a launch-and-satellite supplier to an established constellation operator.
