SpaceX to Invest $100 Billion in New Louisiana Spaceport to Support Starship Launches
SpaceX announced plans to invest at least $100 billion to construct a massive spaceport in Louisiana. The new facility, dubbed "Starbase Louisiana," will be located on 125,000 acres of land near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first launch targeted for 2029. The project aims to support thousands of annual launches for the Starship rocket. The spaceport will feature over a dozen launch towers, propellant production, power generation, and deep-water shipping capabilities. SpaceX plans to land and recover every piece of the Starship rocket to allow for rapid reuse. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry stated the project offers a permanent future and lasting prosperity for the state. SpaceX Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell described the facility as a self-sustaining spaceport. The investment represents a significant capital commitment, as the $100 billion cost is approximately 23 times the company's annual space revenue. This development follows a national space transportation policy signed by President Trump, which calls for the development of more spaceports to support over 1,000 launches and reentries per year by 2030.
