Ed Stack identifies Nike footwear hangover as Dick's Sporting Goods reports lower-than-expected second-quarter earnings
Ed Stack, executive chair of Dick's Sporting Goods, noted that the athletic footwear market is currently experiencing a "footwear hangover" as consumers shift away from legacy Nike silhouettes toward newer styles from emerging brands. This shift in consumer preference has forced Nike to implement aggressive markdowns, creating a domino effect of pricing pressure across the industry. Dick's Sporting Goods reported second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $3.53, missing the $3.76 estimate from Wall Street. Consequently, the company slashed its full-year earnings per share outlook to a range of $11.94 to $13.27, down from its previous forecast of $14.27. The company also lowered its consolidated operating income outlook. These results reflect the challenges faced by the Foot Locker brand, which Dick's acquired for $2.5 billion. Following the report, Dick's stock plummeted approximately 30.7% on Tuesday. Analysts suggest the results confirm long-held investor anxieties regarding the decline of shopping malls and the competition from hungry brands like On Holding.
