The Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported that St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant's Unit 1 was manually shut down on Thursday morning following a non-emergency event. At 9:47 a.m., operators from Florida Power & Light conducted a manual procedure to address three control rods that dropped into the reactor core. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission stated that the trip was uncomplicated and all systems responded normally after the shutdown. Unit 2 of the facility remained unaffected by the incident. The plant, located in Jensen Beach, generates approximately 2,000 megawatts of emissions-free electricity, providing power to more than 1 million homes and businesses. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission resident inspector has been notified of the event. The facility serves as a primary power source for the region, with licenses for both units renewed recently through 2056 and 2063, respectively. Maintenance on the plant's 92 sirens will also occur this coming Monday to test emergency communications.
