A 46-year-old man died at the scene on Wednesday night after detonating an explosive device during a police standoff in Sumner. The incident began after the man forced his way into his ex-girlfriend's apartment in Puyallup, where he assaulted her before fleeing. Police tracked the suspect to his family's home in Sumner, where officers spent approximately 90 minutes attempting to negotiate a peaceful surrender. During the standoff, the Puyallup Police Department utilized pepper balls, a drone, and a K-9 unit to monitor and manage the suspect. As officers and the K-9 handler approached the man, he detonated the device, which was either held by him or attached to his neck. The explosion killed the man instantly. Four officers and a K-9 were transported to a local hospital for evaluation, though they appeared to be uninjured. The Puyallup Police Department and the Pierce County Sheriff's Office bomb squad are currently investigating the incident.
