Nan Zhong Wins Legal Victory as Federal Judge Allows Anti-Asian Bias Lawsuit Against University of Washington to Proceed
A federal judge has ruled in favor of Nan Zhong and his son, Stanley Zhong, by denying the University of Washington's motion to dismiss a civil rights lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that elite institutions, including the University of Washington, engaged in racially discriminatory admissions practices that disadvantage highly qualified Asian-American applicants. Stanley Zhong, who achieved an elite academic record including a 1590 SAT score and a 4.42 GPA, was rejected by 16 of the 18 colleges he applied to. Despite these rejections, he was hired by Google as a software engineer. Nan Zhong stated that the ruling is a major development because the judge found enough factual allegations to support the claims of anti-Asian bias. While the University of Washington Board of Regents noted that admission to the Allen School is highly competitive and prioritizes residents, the Zhong family seeks to correct systemic issues to ensure future students face fewer hurdles. The family spent over a year researching trends before filing the suit to address long-standing racial disparities in college admissions.
