Angie Nixon defeats Alexander Vindman in Florida Democratic Senate primary

Progressive state Representative Angie Nixon secured a major upset victory over former National Security Council aide Alexander Vindman in the Florida Democratic Senate primary. Despite being outspent by a 10-to-1 margin, Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, defeated the Iraq War veteran who gained national prominence as a key witness during President Trump's first impeachment trial. Nixon campaigned on a platform of progressive policies, including Medicare for all and universal child care, while Vindman was recruited by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to represent the establishment. The victory signals a shift toward the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, as several other high-profile figures who led the resistance against President Trump during his first term have lost their respective primaries. Nixon will now face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in the general election. Moody, who won her primary easily, characterized Nixon as a socialist and warned that Florida will never elect a socialist to the US Senate.
