A 15-year-old male student is in critical condition at a local hospital after mixing and ingesting numerous chemicals in the cafeteria of Benson Polytechnic High School. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, prompting a large emergency response and the evacuation of the school. Portland Police Bureau spokesman Mike Benner reported that first responders arrived at the school at approximately 8:30 a.m. following reports of a chemical spill. Fire crews wearing hazmat suits and respiratory devices neutralized the liquid on the cafeteria floor to prevent off-gassing. The student, who was in significant distress, was transported to the hospital where he is currently surrounded by family. Students and staff were evacuated to nearby athletic fields for medical evaluations. Portland Fire & Rescue performed evaluations on up to 200 people, and no other patients were required to be hospitalized. Superintendent Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong stated that the spill has been contained and the school was closed for the rest of the day. Investigators from the explosives disposal and homicide units are also assisting with the preliminary investigation.
