Simona Mohamsson announces the formation of a commission to prevent future school attacks in Sweden.
The Swedish government will form a commission to propose new measures to prevent future school attacks, Minister for Education and Integration Simona Mohamsson announced on Monday. The move follows a recent incident in Fagersta where a sword-wielding assailant killed a 17-year-old girl and wounded three others. Simona Mohamsson noted that while open schools are desirable, the government must ensure that unauthorized individuals do not have free access to the premises. The commission will evaluate recent deadly incidents at educational institutions, including a 2015 attack in Trollhättan and a 2022 stabbing in Malmö. Police are currently investigating the motive for the Friday attack, where they opened fire on an 18-year-old suspect before taking him into custody. The perpetrator, who wore a helmet and carried a sword, bore similarities to previous high-profile school attacks over the last decade.
