Summit Therapeutics and Akeso announce ivonescimab outperformed Merck's Keytruda in overall survival for lung cancer
Summit Therapeutics and Akeso announced that their partnered drug, ivonescimab, demonstrated a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in overall survival compared to Merck's Keytruda in a Phase 3 trial. The study, known as Harmoni-2, focused on patients with first-line PD-L1-positive non-small cell lung cancer in China. Ivonescimab previously met the progression-free survival endpoint in May 2024, where it achieved 11.14 months compared to Keytruda's 5.82 months. The latest results confirm that ivonescimab also outperformed Keytruda in overall survival, a secondary endpoint for which the trial was not originally designed. The companies have not yet released detailed data on the overall survival benefit. Detailed results will be presented at the World Conference on Lung Cancer in Seoul. While the drug is already approved in China for this indication, it has yet to be cleared by the FDA in the United States. Summit Therapeutics is currently awaiting a November 14 decision from the FDA regarding the therapy for NSCLC with mutations in the gene for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR).
