Brendan Norris killed in Newport Harbor shootout after stealing luxury sailboat from Jersey City marina

Brendan Norris, a 27-year-old man from Newport, was shot and killed by police during a violent confrontation in Rhode Island on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred after Norris allegedly stole a 40-foot luxury sailboat, known as Pathfinder, from the Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City. The vessel, described as a rare 1968 Hinkley Bermuda 40, was reported stolen on Saturday night after Norris spent significant time on the boat and engaged with people on the dock. Police and the Coast Guard searched for the boat across the East Coast until it was spotted in Newport Harbor. When officers approached the vessel, Norris fled below deck and armed himself with a firearm, leading to a shots fired exchange. During the shootout, a veteran Newport police officer was shot in the lower body and was subsequently taken to the hospital. The boat owner, Jim Bonomo, expressed gratitude for the recovery of his prized vessel, though he noted the tragic nature of the deadly encounter. Rhode Island State Police and the Attorney General's office are currently investigating the shooting.
