Federico Gutiérrez suspends water cuts in Medellín as the city faces an intense El Niño phenomenon.

Mayor Federico Gutiérrez announced the suspension of water cuts in the northeast and central regions of Medellín starting Wednesday, September 2. The decision follows a period of intermittent interruptions caused by the Piedras Blancas system, which serves the higher zones of these sectors. Federico Gutiérrez noted that the suspension is intended to encourage citizen cooperation in water conservation. While the cuts are suspended, the mayor stated that the water difficulty persists due to the high intensity of the El Niño phenomenon. He noted that the Cauca River currently has a flow of approximately 250 cubic meters per second, which is significantly lower than the 400 to 600 cubic meters per second seen in previous El Niño cycles. To maintain reserves, the mayor established water-saving targets for the metropolitan area. Households in the northeast and central regions are targeted to use 92 liters per household, while the rest of the metropolitan area is targeted to use 70 liters per household. If these savings are not met, general water cuts across the entire city may be implemented.
