Swiss tourist Luzian Andrin Zgraggen sentenced to one year in prison for insulting a sacred Balinese Hindu ritual.

Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, a 26-year-old Swiss construction worker, was sentenced to one year in prison for violating the sacred Balinese Hindu holiday of Nyepi. The tourist was found guilty of insulting the ritual after posting an Instagram video where he described the Day of Silence as "crazy" and used an expletive while walking on a beach during the period when the island is required to be silent and still. Presiding judge Tjokorda Putra Budi Pastima ruled that Zgraggen's actions offended the local people and hurt their faith. Although Zgraggen claimed he did not fully understand the severity of the restrictions and did not intend to insult the Balinese people, the court determined he was held accountable for his actions. This marks a significant enforcement of cultural laws in Bali, where tourists are expected to be home for 24 hours during the holiday. Zgraggen expressed deep regret and apologized to the Balinese people during his defense plea.
