Synchrony Financial partners with OpenAI to integrate credit card payments and rewards into the ChatGPT shopping experience.

Synchrony Financial is collaborating with OpenAI to embed its financing products, rewards, and loyalty programs directly into the ChatGPT chatbot. This partnership aims to allow consumers to complete purchases within the chat window rather than being redirected to a retailer's website. Maran Nalluswami, chief strategy officer at Synchrony Financial, stated that while general-purpose cards will take six to twelve months to integrate, store-specific cards for brands like Amazon and Walmart will take longer as each retailer must be negotiated separately. The collaboration includes the launch of a ChatGPT plugin that allows users to browse Synchrony Marketplace deals and promotional financing. Additionally, Synchrony Financial will deploy OpenAI's latest models internally to accelerate product development. While consumers remain cautious about handing over credit card details to an AI agent, the deal positions Synchrony Financial as a leader in the emerging 'agentic commerce' space. The company is also in talks with competing AI platforms such as Anthropic and Google to ensure its cards are integrated across the broader AI landscape.
