Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died

Hafidh Ameir Hassan died on Monday at 8:00 am local time while receiving treatment at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. He had been suffering from a heart condition and was the first First Gentleman of Tanzania, having served in that role since 2021. Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi officially announced the death and expressed condolences to the family. He noted that funeral arrangements are currently underway in Kizimkazi, a village on the semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar. Before entering national politics, Hafidh Ameir Hassan married President Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978. The couple had four children, including a daughter who serves in Zanzibar's House of Representatives. Regional leaders and organizations have offered their respects. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed sorrow over the loss of a lifelong companion for President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Burundi's President Évariste Ndayishimiye and the African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, also sent their condolences to the family and the people of Tanzania.
