National Seismological Service Records 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Off the Coast of Chiapas

The National Seismological Service recorded a 5.5 magnitude earthquake on the morning of Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The seismic movement occurred at 6:28 am with an epicenter located 145 kilometers southwest of Huixtla, Chiapas, at a depth of 10 kilometers. This tremor was the strongest of a series of at least five movements that occurred within a two-hour window. Subsequent tremors included a 4.1 magnitude earthquake at 6:54 am, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake at 6:58 am, a 4.3 magnitude earthquake at 7:04 am, and a 4.2 magnitude earthquake at 7:43 am. These movements are identified as replicas of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, on July 17th. Authorities have reported no significant damages or injuries from the 5.5 magnitude tremor. State Protection Civil issued recommendations for citizens to check for home damage and avoid using candles or lighters until gas leaks are ruled out. The National Seismological Service continues to monitor the region for further seismic activity.
