Abelardo De La Espriella confirms David Vélez will donate $100 billion to support earthquake victims in Colombia
President Abelardo De La Espriella confirmed that businessman David Vélez will donate $100 billion to support the communities affected by the recent earthquake in Colombia. The donation was announced following a conversation between the two leaders, with President Abelardo De La Espriella describing the decision as a gesture of solidarity. The earthquake, which struck on August 10, 2026, registered a magnitude of 7.4. While the seismic event was more intense than the 1999 Armenia earthquake, its greater depth of 103 kilometers resulted in a lower death toll. As of the latest reports, 289 people have been dead, 4,187 injured, and 143 missing. The disaster has caused significant structural damage, forcing the evacuation of 285 health centers. In cities like Cali and Pereira, rescue operations are nearing completion, while the authorities now begin the long-term recovery process of rebuilding infrastructure and homes left in ruins.
