Valle del Cauca faces 30 billion pesos in earthquake losses as reconstruction efforts begin

The Valle del Cauca region is facing significant economic challenges following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck on August 10th. The region, which serves as a major economic engine for Colombia, suffered direct physical losses estimated at 30 billion pesos across five departments, with Valle del Cauca accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total damage. Technical assessments indicate that the damage is concentrated in construction and infrastructure, particularly affecting the port of Buenaventura. This disruption has impacted the country's trade, as the port handles approximately 30 percent of Colombia's commercial exchange. To address the urgency, the administration announced a series of measures including rental subsidies and price controls to prevent market speculation. Meanwhile, international support has arrived from Japan, and local government officials, including Governor Dilian Francisca Toro, have committed to permanent support for the city of Cali during the recovery process.
