Alejandra Paharsingh Arrested After Fatal Tesla Crash in Midtown Manhattan
Alejandra Paharsingh was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter after a 2024 Tesla Model Y crashed into scaffolding and a bus stop pole in Midtown Manhattan early Wednesday morning. The crash occurred at approximately 2:43 a.m. as the vehicle traveled eastbound on East 42nd Street, striking a sidewalk shed outside 315 Madison Avenue before continuing for several blocks to stop near Second Avenue. Elise Suomi, a 27-year-old passenger from Harlem, was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital following the collision. Paharsingh, also 27, was taken to the hospital in stable condition and was subsequently charged with driving while ability impaired and leaving the scene of an accident. The NYPD is currently investigating the cause of the crash. While some observers noted the vehicle's high rate of speed, the police have not officially attributed the crash to the car's Autopilot or Full Self-Driving systems. The driver was held at the Midtown South Precinct.
