Christian Castro Released from Texas Jail as Minnesota Fails to Secure Extradition

Christian Castro, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, was released from a Texas detention center on Thursday morning. The release follows a federal judge's decision to deny Minnesota's request for a temporary restraining order to halt the release. Castro was charged in Minnesota with four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime after shooting a Venezuelan immigrant, Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, in the leg during an immigration crackdown in Minneapolis. While Minnesota officials warned that Castro could flee to Mexico, U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. ruled that the case was not yet ripe for adjudication because Governor Greg Abbott had neither agreed nor refused to sign the rendition warrant. Texas officials argued that the governor is conducting an internal investigation into Castro's fugitive status. The administration announced that the investigation into Castro's actions is ongoing, and the officer remains suspended without pay. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison claimed that the Governor of Texas is turning the state into a sanctuary for violent criminals, while Governor Abbott responded by criticizing the Minnesota legal team's preparation.
