Texas Court Reduces Alex Jones's Punitive Damages for Sandy Hook Hoax Claims

A Texas court has significantly reduced the financial penalty for conspiracy theorist Alex Jones regarding his false claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was a hoax. The Texas Third Court of Appeals issued a unanimous ruling that slashed the punitive damages from over $45 million down to $1.5 million, citing state laws that limit lawsuit damages. This decision leaves the compensatory damages of $4.1 million awarded to parents Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis intact. While Alex Jones described the ruling as a "gigantic victory for the First Amendment," his legal team noted that the decision is largely irrelevant to his overall liability. He still faces a major $1.25 billion judgment in Connecticut for the same massacre. Because of these massive judgments, Alex Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, have filed for bankruptcy. The families of the victims have yet to collect any payments from Alex Jones as he continues to pursue various appeals in state and federal courts.
