Mistral's choice of Zhipu's GLM-5.2 model highlights the tension between European political goals and commercial interests.

Mistral has selected GLM-5.2, an open-weight large language model developed by Zhipu, as its primary model of choice. Zhipu is one of China’s six "AI tiger" companies and was included on the US entity list in 2025 due to national security concerns regarding military modernization. This selection reflects a broader trend where European commercial interests often pull in different directions from political incentives. While the European Union seeks to create a own sovereign AI offering, the bloc has lagged behind the United States and China in investment and innovation. Geoeconomics expert Shahin Vallee noted that prioritizing AI adoption over innovation is the correct strategy for Mistral and Europe. By choosing a model from a Chinese company, Mistral demonstrates a pragmatic approach to commercial success over purely political alignment.
