Chen Xiaosong, a physicist at the school of systems science at Beijing Normal University, reported that the Tibetan Plateau is losing stability. A study published in Nature Communications indicates that the region is experiencing a building of chaos and disorder within its complex system. Chen Xiaosong stated that from now until the end of the century, the increase of soil water and the intensification of glacier melting will constantly trigger geological disasters. The research team examined the plateau’s soil moisture system from 2000 to 2024. This system is closely linked to the water and climate patterns affecting nearly two billion people across South and East Asia.
