WalletHub identifies Wyoming as the top state for retirement based on affordability, quality of life, and healthcare metrics.
WalletHub identified Wyoming as the best state for retirement in 2026, narrowly beating Florida for the top spot. The ranking was determined by evaluating 50 states across 46 metrics in three main categories: affordability, quality of life, and healthcare. Wyoming was noted for having the 10th strongest elder-abuse protections, the fifth-lowest violent crime rate in the country, and the seventh-lowest poverty rate for residents aged 65 and up. The study also highlighted specific cities as top retirement destinations. Florida cities dominated the top three, with Orlando, Miami, and Tampa ranking as the best cities to retire in. Miami was noted for its high number of adult volunteer activities, art galleries, and fishing facilities per capita. Additionally, the city of Roseville, California, was recognized as a popular choice for retirees seeking suburban living with manageable housing costs and low crime rates.
