Leopold Aschenbrenner's AI Hedge Fund Experiences Massive Collapse After High Leverage Bets

Leopold Aschenbrenner, a German-born math prodigy, saw his AI-focused hedge fund, Situational Awareness LP, experience a dramatic collapse in late July 2025. The fund, which grew to $45 billion in assets under management, was forced to sell its public equity portfolio at a 10% discount to Ken Griffin's Citadel after a series of margin calls caused by high leverage. While Aschenbrenner's thesis on the rapid adoption of AI infrastructure was widely praised, his strategy relied on heavy borrowing, reportedly up to four times his capital. When AI-related stocks fell and software shorts rallied, the leveraged positions resulted in a massive loss of approximately $35 billion in value within weeks. Despite the setback, Silicon Valley investors remain optimistic about Aschenbrenner's ability to rebuild the fund. He is currently shifting his focus toward private tech firms in the AI supply chain, such as Source Foundry, to avoid the volatility of leveraged public stocks. Aschenbrenner has accepted responsibility for the investment lessons learned and is currently not accepting new capital until the fund is ready to.
