Southwest Airlines transitions to premium service model with assigned seating and new fees

Southwest Airlines has officially moved away from its long-standing identity as a budget-focused carrier by introducing premium offerings and structural changes. The airline ended its iconic "bags fly free" policy in May 2025, and began charging fees for checked luggage on most fares. Furthermore, the carrier transitioned to an assigned seating model on January 27, 2026, replacing its traditional "cattle call" boarding style with numbered groups and specific seat categories. While these changes have drawn criticism from some travelers who valued the airline's previous simplicity, the administration announced that the carrier is also expanding its premium features. These include extra legroom options, a partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink to improve in-flight WiFi speeds, and the upcoming launch of a Business Priority program in 2027. The airline is also constructing premium airport lounges and exploring the possibility of future first-class seating. Despite the shift toward a more traditional, tiered service model, Southwest remains profitable and continues to expand its international reach through interline partnerships.
