Hossein Taeb returns to lead Iran's Basij paramilitary force to combat internal unrest and security threats

The administration announced a series of leadership changes in Iran's military and security apparatus to bolster domestic stability. Hossein Taeb was reappointed as the commander of the Basij paramilitary force, a key instrument for monitoring society and suppressing demonstrations. Taeb, a hard-line figure known for his capacity for repression and security control, is reorganizing the Basij to root out opponents within the regime and expand a network of grassroots informants to preempt potential protests. Iranian authorities are facing increasing internal pressure from deteriorating economic conditions and the risk of new uprisings. To counter these threats, the IRGC is directing a growing share of its resources toward internal security, including the deployment of reinforcements to the Kurdish and Baloch border regions. In these areas, armed groups like the People's Front of Fighters and various Kurdish fighters are exerting pressure on the security forces. The regime is also utilizing executions to silence dissent, with at least 56 people executed on national security charges since March 19. Germany and 31 other countries have condemned the use of the death penalty to intimidate the society.
