Diesel Fuel Prices Reach Highest Levels Since 2022 as Global Conflicts Drive Up Costs

Diesel fuel prices have reached their highest levels since 2022, with the national average cost hitting $5.78 per gallon. This increase is driven by a monthlong run of rising crude oil prices and refineries nearing capacity. The global rise in energy prices is fueled by the ongoing war in Iran, which has restricted ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and the escalation of the Ukraine war, where Russia has banned diesel exports until the end of September. President Trump said the latest round of U.S. strikes on Iran would not last long, while noting that U.S. forces are bringing boats out of the Strait of Hormuz daily. Despite these high prices, Federal Reserve governor Christopher Waller said he expects consumer and wholesale inflation readings to be reasonable in the weeks ahead. Analysts note that because diesel powers the majority of freight, farm equipment, and heavy-duty trucks, the price spike is expected to have a knock-on effect on grocery prices and other goods. Unlike gasoline, the government cannot easily dilute diesel to lower prices, and the lack of new refinery construction in the U.S. since the 1970s has limited the ability to supply the market quickly.
