The U.S. government sold seized Anthropic shares from Caroline Ellison and Nishad Singh to existing investors.
The U.S. government sold shares of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic that were seized from former FTX executives Caroline Ellison and Nishad Singh. The pair invested a combined $50 million in the company during its 2022 Series B funding round. Following the collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange, a federal court ordered Ellison and Singh to forfeit their stakes as part of their criminal sentencing. The administration announced that the government took possession of the shares in early 2025. The U.S. Marshals Service subsequently sold these shares to existing Anthropic investors. While the exact sale price was not disclosed, the shares are now estimated to be worth between $2.6 billion and $5 billion, depending on the company's valuation. Prosecutors indicated that the proceeds from the sale could be used to compensate victims of the FTX fraud. However, as of mid-2026, the funds had not yet been transferred to the FTX bankruptcy estate. The Justice Department remains in the process of determining how to distribute the forfeited funds to the millions of potential victims.
