Stellantis Plans to Build Next-Generation Jeep Cherokee at Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois

Stellantis has confirmed plans to produce the next-generation Jeep Cherokee at its Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois. While the current sixth-generation model is currently being produced in Mexico, the administration announced that the new successor will be built in the United States starting in 2029. To facilitate this move, Stellantis has increased its investment in the facility by $200 million, bringing the total investment to $800 million. The company has already spent over $60 million on preparations for body, paint, stamping, and general assembly. The next-generation Cherokee will be the first U.S.-made model to feature the new STLA One architecture. Additionally, the Belvidere plant will produce at least one other vehicle based on the new architecture, which is expected to be the next-generation Jeep Compass. Although the timeline for reopening the factory has been slightly delayed, the company aims to start pilot production in the first half of 2028, with retail production targeted for the second half of 2029.
