The Pentagon launches ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government on its secure AI portal

The Department of Defense launched ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government on GenAI.mil, a secure portal providing generative AI tools to 3 million civilian and military personnel. These custom versions of popular commercial models are tailored for warfighter needs and allow users to access frontier AI models without sending sensitive government data through ordinary consumer channels. ChatGPT Mil, developed by OpenAI, is designed for document-heavy unclassified work such as planning, policy, logistics, and administration. It is accredited for controlled unclassified information at Impact Level 5, ensuring that data remains isolated within the government environment. Grok for Government, an AI product of Starshield AI, was added to the platform to help eliminate vendor lock-in and promote a broader American AI ecosystem. The platform has already attracted more than 1.7 million unique users. While these tools are intended for unclassified work, the department is separately developing AI capabilities for classified networks and combat operations. The administration announced that these tools will accelerate routine tasks, freeing up time for personnel to focus on more critical projects.
