Gretchen Whitmer calls on President Trump to lift stop-work order on Brandon Road Interbasin Project

The administration announced on September 2 that it lifted a stop-work order on the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, a state-federal project in Joliet, Illinois, designed to prevent invasive carp from reaching the Great Lakes. The project, which costs over $1 billion, uses a multilayered defense system of electric, acoustic, and bubble deterrents to protect the Great Lakes fishery from invasive species like bighead and silver carp. Work on the project was halted in July for an administrative review that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers did not fully explain. The order was lifted following a phone call from Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to President Trump, during which she emphasized the urgency of the project as invasive carp were recently discovered 80 miles from Lake Michigan. While Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer successfully advocated for the project, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker expressed concern over the lack of communication from the administration regarding the halt. Pritzker requested an emergency meeting of the project's Senior Executive Board to ensure the project moves forward without further political delays.
