The Food and Drug Administration Approves Moderna's First mRNA Flu Vaccine for Adults Over 50

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved mFlusiva, the first mRNA-based influenza vaccine for adults aged 50 and older. Developed by Moderna, the vaccine utilizes technology similar to the COVID-19 vaccine to deliver a genetic blueprint that instructs cells to produce influenza proteins. In a phase 3 clinical trial involving over 40,000 participants, mFlusiva demonstrated 27% greater relative vaccine efficacy against confirmed influenza compared to a standard-dose licensed vaccine for adults aged 50 to 64. For adults aged 65 and older, the vaccine received accelerated approval based on clinical trials showing a strong immune response. Experts note that mRNA technology allows for faster manufacturing than traditional egg-based methods, potentially allowing for real-time adjustments to match emerging viral strains. While the vaccine is not intended to replace all existing flu shots, it provides a new evidence-based option for patients. The administration announced that the vaccine will be available for the 2026 to 2027 respiratory virus season, with researchers highlighting its potential to be adapted for various other infectious diseases and cancer therapies.
