Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 3.5% growth in U.S. employment from 2025 to 2035
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that the U.S. economy will add 5.9 million jobs between 2025 and 2035, increasing total employment from 170.3 million to 176.2 million. This represents a 3.5% growth rate, which is slower than the 10.9% growth rate seen from 2015 to 2025. Healthcare and social assistance is expected to be the fastest-growing sector by total job numbers, adding 2.2 million jobs over the next decade. This growth is driven by an aging population and an increase in chronic health conditions. Within this sector, nurse practitioners are projected to be the fastest-growing occupation, with a 41% increase in employment. The utility industry is also expected to see significant growth, with solar electric power generation up 153% and wind electric power generation up 62%. Solar photovoltaic panel installers are projected to be the second-fastest growing occupation in percentage terms. Conversely, automation and artificial intelligence are expected to reduce demand for office and administrative support roles. The office and administrative support sector is projected to see a 4% drop in employment, which is the largest percentage decline in any major occupational group.
