Michigan Voters Express Concern Over Economic Impact of President Trump's Tariffs on Canadian Goods
Michigan voters are expressing significant concern regarding the economic impact of the tariffs imposed by President Trump on Canadian goods. A poll conducted by WDIV and the Detroit News found that 64.2% of Michigan voters oppose the 50% tariffs on Canadian products, while only 28.6% support them. Focus groups held by the Swing Voter Project revealed that many swing voters in Michigan are worried about the affordability crisis and the rising costs of everyday goods. Participants noted that higher tariffs could worsen the cost of products like shampoo and alcohol, which are often imported from Canada. Economic data from the National Taxpayers Union Foundation indicates that these tariffs have cost the average Michigan household more than $5,600 since January. Mark Fisk, a spokesperson for the Michigan Smart Trade Alliance, stated that the trade war has been economically devastating for Michigan families and businesses. Additionally, Daniel Belchior, an assistant professor of economics at Central Michigan University, noted that the trade war creates uncertainty for businesses, potentially causing them to change plans for future growth in the state.
