Mark Carney Retaliates Against U.S. Tariffs as Trade Talks Between Canada and the United States Collapse

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a "dollar for dollar" retaliation against United States tariffs following the collapse of trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington. The U.S. recently imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, including dairy, wine, and wood products. Mark Carney stated that the U.S. asked for too much and offered too little, leading to a decision to target sectors such as steel, agricultural equipment, and electronics starting September 8. While U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer noted that a deal was close, the Canadian side requested more than Washington was willing to offer. The administration announced that the U.S. would provide the best access to the United States for any country, while President Trump stated that Canada wanted the benefits of being a state without actually being one. Economists warn that while the tariffs affect a small portion of total U.S. imports, they could be devastating for small and medium-sized Canadian companies. If the dispute escalates further, Canadian GDP could be pushed into recession territory.
