Anthropic and HHMI Janelia Research Campus Partner to Launch Model Hardware Standard for AI-Driven Scientific Research
Anthropic and HHMI Janelia Research Campus have launched the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a shared specification designed to allow AI agents to safely operate and coordinate multiple physical devices in parallel. Developed as a collaboration between Alek Kemeny and Arco Bast, the standard addresses the challenge of disparate hardware components lacking a common interface, reducing integration time from months to minutes. MHS introduces a standardized driver that translates between operating systems and hardware, allowing AI models like Claude to reason through experimental steps, update parameters in real-time, and recover from errors autonomously. Early testing shows that MHS enables scientists to orchestrate complex workflows, such as calibrating lasers or focusing microscopes, using natural language. The standard includes a tagging system to describe physical characteristics and safety limits, providing AI models with context for devices they have never seen before. The administration announced that the standard will eventually be open-sourced, following a research preview period with partners like Amazon Web Services and Raspberry Pi. The goal is to remove barriers between scientists and their research, accelerating the pace of biological discovery and manufacturing.
