Residents seeking relief at the beach may encounter some of the warmest ocean temperatures in recorded history, with sea bottom temperatures at Scripps Pier La Jolla tying for the hottest ever recorded for that date. To help residents stay cool, the National Weather Service and the Health and Human Services Agency recommend using local 'Cool Zones'—free air-conditioned sites—and avoiding the outdoors during peak temperatures. The heatwave is also impacting the West Coast and Southwest, where temperatures in Phoenix and Las Vegas are reaching the upper 90s and 110s. While the Southwest will see a cooling trend by Sunday, extreme heat and humidity are expected to move eastward across the country by mid-next week.
