Seneca County Declares Disaster Conditions Following Severe Storms and Tornadoes

Board of Supervisors Chairman Michael Enslow declared significant disaster conditions in Seneca County following severe storms and tornadoes on Wednesday night. The administration of the county is seeking state and federal assistance to manage recovery efforts, as local resources may be insufficient to cover the full financial impact of the storm. Two confirmed tornadoes struck the region, with the village of Waterloo being particularly hard hit. An EF1 tornado with winds up to 95 mph traveled through Waterloo, while a nearby EF2 tornado with winds up to 115 mph struck the town of Fayette. The storms caused widespread power outages, downed trees, and damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure. In neighboring Wyoming County, the National Weather Service confirmed two separate EF1 tornadoes near Letchworth State Park. These storms caused significant tree damage and toppled trees onto cabins and pavilions, forcing the park officials to close the Parade Grounds area for the remainder of the season. Residents and volunteers worked to clear debris and restore power. In Waterloo, many residents helped clear roads to ensure emergency vehicles could pass. While most areas have seen power restoration, many homes and businesses remain without electricity.
