Aengus Wagner reports Big Sur businesses close again as Timber and Plaskett fires expand along the California coast

Big Sur businesses have reopened their doors only to face another closure as the Timber Fire and the Plaskett Fire expand along the California coast. Aengus Wagner, wine and service director for Nepenthe, noted that the region's busiest month is being impacted by the fires, which have forced a 40-mile stretch of the Highway 1 to close. The Timber Fire, which began on August 8, has burned over 23,000 acres and remains only partially contained. Meanwhile, the Plaskett Fire, which erupted on Wednesday, remains uncontained as it burns through steep terrain. To support firefighting efforts, officials have closed all four state parks in the Big Sur area and urged tourists to stay away. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office advises those remaining in evacuation zones to be prepared to self-sustain for up to seven days. Travelers are encouraged to use Highway 101 as an alternative route.
