The decision follows a primary where Kreiss-Tomkins finished first with 22.5% of the vote, while Begich secured second place with 20.8%. By withdrawing, Begich aims to consolidate Democratic support for a single candidate in the November general election, which is expected to be a Republican-dominated field. Begich cited data suggesting a Democrat is likely to win if only one appears on the ballot, and expressed concern over competing for scarce campaign funds. He noted that his campaign priorities, such as fully funding public education and lowering the cost of living, align closely with those of Kreiss-Tomkins.
