FBI Official Chris Raia Warns of Adaptable Terrorist Threats and Growing Drone Vulnerabilities 25 Years After 9/11
Federal authorities are warning that foreign terrorist organizations remain highly adaptable and agile, posing significant challenges to U.S. security 25 years after the September 11 attacks. FBI co-deputy director Chris Raia stated that while the U.S. intelligence community is better positioned to stop sophisticated plots, terrorists are increasingly utilizing social media to radicalize individuals from their own homes. Recent data shows that the ranks of ISIS and al-Qaeda are growing overseas, with ISIS boasting up to 18,000 members and al-Qaeda reaching 28,000 members. The FBI has arrested at least 16 people domestically for allegedly plotting to kill Americans on behalf of these groups in the past year and a half. Experts also highlight the growing threat of unmanned aerial systems, or drones, which have caused hundreds of illegal flights over U.S. airports and military bases. While the administration announced a shift in counterterrorism priorities, some analysts suggest that the current strategy may lack a focus on far-right extremism and may divert resources from core terrorism cases by designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
