The administration announced that the USS George Washington is currently en route to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed for nearly nine months. The transition comes amid growing concerns regarding the mental health of sailors and a lack of fresh food and basic supplies on the Lincoln. While families and Democratic lawmakers have reported that some sailors have lost significant weight and faced mental health crises, the administration has largely defended the deployment. President Trump stated that the deployment was "not nearly long enough," a comment that drew criticism from naval families and Democratic senators who felt the administration was downplaying the sailors' sacrifices. In contrast, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed reports of deteriorating conditions as being "completely misrepresented" by journalists. To provide clarity, Republican Representative Don Bacon suggested that Congress should bring in high-ranking Navy officials to testify and explain the truth of the conditions on board.
