Tropical Storm Karina strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane in the Pacific Ocean, though it remains far from land.

Tropical Storm Karina strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday. The storm currently maintains maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (80 miles per hour) and is moving northwest at 24 kilometers per hour (15 miles per hour). While the hurricane center is located deep inside the ocean, it is not currently threatening any landmasses. However, the National Hurricane Center warns that the storm's waves will likely cause dangerous conditions of strong surf and rip currents along parts of southwestern Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula. Meteorologists predict that Karina could intensify into a major hurricane this week. Meanwhile, tropical storm Lowell is also active in the Pacific, located southeast of Hawaii. Lowell is expected to maintain its tropical storm status until Saturday before becoming a hurricane. Both storms are currently not posing an immediate threat to land.
