Travis Kalanick plans to enter the robotaxi market with his new startup Atoms.
Travis Kalanick is preparing to enter the autonomous vehicle industry with his new startup, Atoms. Following a $1.7 billion funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, the company plans to embark on an aggressive hiring spree to secure autonomous engineering talent. Atoms has held early talks with Uber, where Kalanick previously served as CEO. Uber has invested $100 million in Atoms and may use the startup's robotaxi technology for its ride-hailing network. While Kalanick described Atoms as a "physical AI" company, the startup stated it is an industrial software company focused on industrial applications. Kalanick has tapped Anthony Levandowski, a former Uber self-driving chief, to oversee the autonomous vehicle work at Atoms. The company has also acquired Pronto, an autonomous mining startup led by Levandowski. Kalanick noted that industrial AI will power the next Industrial Revolution, covering industries such as mining, construction, and heavy transport.
