The administration announced new rules for Trump Accounts to prioritize low-cost, objective financial performance over ideological ESG criteria.
The administration announced new investment guidelines for Trump Accounts, also known as 530A IRAs, designed to prioritize objective financial criteria and low fees. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the new rules aim to exclude investment funds rooted in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria to ensure that children's investments are focused on long-term financial performance rather than political activism. These tax-deferred accounts, created by President Trump, provide a $1,000 government seed contribution for children born between 2025 and 2028. The administration announced that eligible indices must measure a broad segment of the U.S. or global equity market. Currently, the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF serves as the default investment. The Trump Accounts app, developed in partnership with Robinhood, has already seen over 7 million families sign up since its July 4 launch. The administration announced that the program aims to help children build financial security through compound growth, with additional philanthropic contributions, such as a $6.25 billion gift from Michael and Susan Dell, further seeding the accounts for younger children.
