Court Confirms Suspension of Trial for Former Baja California Governor Ernesto Ruffo Appel

A federal court has unanimously confirmed the definitive suspension of the oral trial for Ernesto Ruffo Appel, the former governor of Baja California. The First Collegiate Tribunal in Penal Matters ruled that the arguments presented by the General Prosecutor of the Republic against the suspension were unfounded. This decision maintains the intermediate stage of the penal process, meaning the trial will not advance until a final resolution is reached on the appeal. Ernesto Ruffo Appel is currently facing charges of organized crime and oil smuggling. The investigation alleges that he and his accomplices used 11 companies to introduce over 18 million liters of diesel and gasoline into the country through railway transportation. The prosecution maintains that these hydrocarbons were imported in illicit conditions, resulting in an alleged loss to the federal fiscal of over 166 million pesos. The former governor remains incarcerated in the Altiplano prison. The tribunal's decision does not declare him innocent, but rather pauses the proceedings until the final judgment on the protection requested by Ruffo Appel is reached.
