Harmeet Dhillon Announces Justice Department Deployment of 1,000 Federal Election Monitors

The Justice Department plans to deploy a record 1,000 federal monitors to polling places across the United States for the upcoming midterm elections. Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, announced the move to ensure compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race, gender, ethnicity, religion, or disability. While the Justice Department has historically sent out dozens of staff to monitor various polling places, the administration announced a significant expansion of the workforce to reach the 1,000-monitor goal. To achieve this, the department will recruit volunteers from across the federal government, including U.S. Attorney's Offices. The move comes as the Civil Rights Division faces scrutiny for filing 31 lawsuits seeking unredacted voter data from states. Some states have expressed suspicion regarding these efforts, as the division has not yet prevailed in a single lawsuit. The administration announced that these monitors will be deployed to locations where there might be voter fraud issues, though critics argue the deployment is a strategic move to ensure the integrity of the election process.
