President Donald Trump announced plans to draft legal documents giving farmers and ranchers the right to process their own food. This move aims to break the monopoly held by four major meatpacking companies that control approximately 85% of the country's meat-processing capacity. While ranchers can currently slaughter and process livestock for their own use, meat intended for sale generally requires federal inspection to ensure food safety. The administration announced that it would begin unveiling beef-processing actions to reduce red tape and support smaller processors. This announcement follows backlash from cattle producers and Republican lawmakers who opposed a plan to allow 300,000 metric tons of imported foreign ground beef. To address the cattle shortage and high prices, the administration also announced a 90-day waiver on beef tariffs for imported ground beef. The foreign beef imports are scheduled to begin on September 1.
