State Senator Eric Barlow defeats Trump-endorsed Megan Degenfelder in Wyoming gubernatorial primary

Republican state Senator Eric Barlow won the Wyoming gubernatorial primary on Tuesday, defeating Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder. Although Degenfelder was endorsed by Trump, Barlow secured the victory by focusing his campaign on protecting public lands, funding public schools, and expanding rural health care access. Barlow emerged from a four-way primary field that included Marine Corps colonel Brent Bien and professional bull rider Curt Blake. While Degenfelder and Barlow entered the final stretch of the campaign with similar financial resources, Barlow was able to overcome the attacks from Degenfelder's campaign, which cast him as too liberal. This victory marks another instance where an endorsement from Trump failed to secure a win for his chosen candidate. Recent losses for Trump-endorsed candidates in other states have shown a vulnerability in his endorsement power. Barlow will face Democrat Kenneth Casner in the general election on November 3.
